AFT Insulation – The Difference Between Cellulose and Rockwool InsulationAFT Insulation – The Difference Between Cellulose and Rockwool Insulation

Spray foam insulation has been helping homeowners and builders cut their energy costs and make buildings more comfortable since 2006. We offer free estimates for all proposed insulation upgrades, access to the best insulation materials available and expert installation by trained technicians. In addition, we offer full home energy assessments to identify additional energy saving opportunities for your house or building.

Cellulose insulation is a natural thermal/acoustical insulation made from recycled paper fibers in highly efficient electrically driven mills. Recycled newsprint and cardboard are the principal ingredients, but other paper products can also be used.

Once shredded, chemicals are added to provide fire retardant and mold/mildew resistant properties to the material. Sodium borate and ammonium sulfate are the primary compounds. The result is a non-combustible material with a smoke development index and toxic vapor development index of zero/zero, which is better than most fiberglass insulation.

The cellulose product that is most commonly used in attics is loose-fill cellulose, which has a typical density of 1.5 lbs./ft3. Loose-fill cellulose can be installed in walls as well, but the wall must be capable of drying to the exterior, which may require an air barrier, vapor barrier, and/or radiant barrier. For this reason we recommend that you have a professional contractor install a wet-spray cellulose system when using it in walls.

Another popular cellulose insulation is rock wool, which is made from recycled furnace slag and spun into fibers similar to fiberglass. It is available in batts and as a blown-in product from several manufacturers. Rockwool contains silica, so it should be installed only by professionals who take proper safety precautions to contain the dust. It has a lower R-value than cellulose, but it is much more durable and does not settle as easily as loose-fill cellulose.
